Synopsis (from IMDb): Dueling high school debate champs who are at odds on just about everything forge ahead with ambitious plans to get into the colleges of their dreams.
Ok, yeah I know that a movie about two kids (only members) in a debate club may not be something you or me are attracted to watch, especially when those two-only memebers- can agree in pretty much A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G.
But, trust me this is a sweet movie about a girl and a boy who are really competitive, and have been sacrificing their “normal” life to work harder in school to get in their dream colleges.
Candy Jar? You may be thinking what is the title about…well…our two main characters have other thing in common, their school counselor has a lot of candy jars in her office. (This movie made me wanna eat candies)
Instead of comedy I would say this is a coming-of-age movie, because we have to young characters about to go to college trying to figuring out themselves and even they’ve been hating each other since FOREVER but find out they’re the only friends they have. The characters well-definided personality and how they grow is definitely one of the great things from this, ’cause even if they think they’re perfect life shows them they’re only humans with ups and downs like everybody else.
The funniest characters (to me) in the whole movie are the mothers, who studied high school together and I saw a feud going on between them.
Lona’s mom is a widow woman who has several jobs to raise her daughter, in the story she shays she was a popular cheerlader during her high school years and that she won a competition against Bennett’s mom. On the other side, we have Bennett’s mom who’s single and actually adopted his son, she’s someone important in the city (because Bennett had a recommedantion letter from Barack Obama) and she’s rich; according to the story she used to be the “nerd” girl in school.
Those two moms are definitely something to follow on the story, they keep fighting and competiting with each other and their personalities are definitely opposites, they’re definitely the ones that add the “comedy” side to the movie.
So, basically that’s the whole movie, watching a lot of debates competition and the characters just interacting with each other. Sound boring, right? Somehow it isn’t that boring.
Yes, I know this isn’t exactly the best movie of the year but it’s really fun to watch, it’s enjoyable and if you watch it carefuly you may get the message. It’s something you should give a chance to.
My rating for this movie is…⭐⭐⭐(out of five). Probably I liked it because it’s kinda my type, I mean if I ignore the whole debate thing.
Would you give a chance to this movie? Tell me in the comments, and if you already watched it also tell me your opinion in the comments.
